Deep in the heart of Texas

Today was a fun and food-filled day. We started the day off with lunch (because we basically slept in until 11) that was expertly grilled by Ben. Ben and Stephanie had picked out an awesome watermelon, corn on the cob, asparagus, and burgers for our fourth of July lunch. We then went over to one of their friend's houses for some pre-fireworks fun, leading to a game of home run derby where Jenny actually dominated and ended up winning. I'm pretty sure she will be rubbing that in and reminding Robbie for the rest of the month. We walked downtown, joining around 100,000 other patriotic Texans, for some fireworks. We grabbed some tacos on the way, which were fantastic and probably topped the tacos from yesterday. We have had about 300 tacos since we have been here, and each one has been the most fantastic taco we have ever tasted. Amazing food.

A bit blurry, but the general scene downtown for the festivities

The rest of our day was absorbed obsessively in a website called Sporcle. Google it and thank us later. It has a list of about a thousand quizzes where you can test your knowledge on everything from MLB hit leaders to international capital cities to TV shows on NBC from the 90s. We realized that we need to study up on the periodic table of elements, former Pope names, and Academy award winners.

Austin has been great, and we have loved spending some time with Ben & Stephanie & Jackson. Tomorrow we are on our way to Odessa, TX. Odessa is where Ben's mom lives, and it's pretty much common knowledge that Ben's mom likes Robbie more than her own son. Ben insists it's a good idea for Robbie to show up unannounced, so we'll see how that goes. Ben and Stephanie keep warning us that western Texas is pretty boring, but hopefully we'll see something cool like a tumbleweed.

  1. The trip to Western Texas should be interesing...looked at the map and saw a lot of roads named "Ranch Road", "Farm to Market" and even one called "Toe Nail Trail"! I'm afraid you won't be able to follow you public restroom rules on this route.....

Sounds like the food and visit was fantastic....and I hope Ben's mom is surprised!!

  3. sweet bathroom rules... i can imagine those will only get more important as you go further west... hey, btw, you guys should try to find some kind of mapping tool to show people where you are on a map and where you've driven... I found a few on google, but that would be awesome if you could link them to here!
    hope your 4th was happy!
    love you. - sis
